Donald Vernon Stocker was President of the Rondeau Leaseholders Association from 1976 - 1981. He spent his summers at 52 Lakeshore Road. He passed away last week at his home in Michigan. His leadership laid the groundwork which secured our 31-year lease extension in 1986.
His published obituary follows....
Donald Vernon Stocker, age 83, of Onsted, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at his home. He was born January, 1927 in Detroit, to Alfred Otto and Elsie (Breitenbach) Stocker. Donald served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1946. On September 23, 1950 in Detroit he married Clara Smith and she survives. Donald was a Professor Emeritus at Wayne State University until his retirement in 1989.
In addition to his wife, Clara, he is survived by two daughters, Jan (Ron) Heverly of Frankfort, MI, and Laura (Chuck) Dorais of Canton, MI; one sister, Jeannette Stocker of Redford, MI; and four grandchildren, Linda Reno, Richie Reno, Brett Wysocki, and Eric Dorais. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Don leaves a loving, supportive, large extended family. All who knew him became part of the circle of love that surrounded him. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian with Pastor Craig Pahl officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Visitation will be held today 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian. Visitation will also be held on Saturday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the USO or Lenawee County Humane Society.
From Mr. Stocker's President's Report in the 1978-79 Rondeau Directory: "It is now common knowledge that the Ministry .... agreed upon some alternatives to the 1954 policy decision (to phase-out cottages by 1986) and as this is being written, those alternatives are before the Ontario Cabinet. We all earnestly hope for a favourable outcome to this long appeal for justice." In Rondeau, some things never change.
During our Victoria Day Weekend meeting, the RCA Executive unanimously approved making a donation in Mr. Stocker's memory to the Humane Society as was his wishes.
