Spraying for Phragmites in the Park Until October 31st

Screen Shot 2017-09-25 at 2.07.40 PMAs stewards of the park, we are happy to post this notice from our superintendent Brad Connor:

Ontario Parks will be applying the liquid herbicide “Roundup Custom for Aquatic and Terrestrial Use” to control the invasive grass Phragmites. This application is part of a Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry pilot project to control Phragmites growing within wet areas and to promote the recovery of native marsh flora.

Up to 83 hectares of the marsh will be treated with the herbicide using a mix of high-pressure equipment mounted on utility task vehicles or boats and backpack sprayers.

Application of the herbicide must occur under specific weather conditions; therefore the application will occur on days that meet those conditions between September 1, 2017, and October 31, 2017.

Certain areas of the park including some roads and trails will be closed during treatment and for a period of post-treatment.  Signs will be posted 48 hours prior to the application.

For more information, contact the park superintendent Brad Connor,  at 519-674-1760.
