Legal Opinion Regarding Your Property Tax Bill

To All RCA Members…

As you are well aware, the MNR’s Christmas gift to all Rondeau cottage families was a lump of coal — an invoice for thousands of dollars in property taxes that we’ve never had to pay before.  As much as we all knew this was coming, the timing was terrible — and the MNR’s legal ability to add this new layer of taxation onto our Crown Lease after almost thirty years of not charging it is dubious at best.

At the request of RCA President Dr David Colby and as approved by the Executive, we have asked our lawyer, Mr David Kirwin, for his legal opinion on the efforts by the province to add this new lawyer of taxation onto our current leases.  Mr Kirwin researched the matter thoroughly and has come to the conclusion that further clarity is required on whether or not the province can actually do this.  At this point he recommends that we withhold payment on this new tax bill until an upcoming court hearing clarifies the matter.

To be clear, you still MUST pay your usual Lease Fee + Service Fee by the end of the year.  There is no question we are liable to pay these fees!
